Destiny (Alın Yazısı) (translated)

Movie · 1972 · 4 people

Orhan Aksoy directed Alın Yazısı ("Destiny"), a Yeşilçam revenge drama from 1972. A Turkish adaptation of the Iranian film Gheysar, it mixes crime, adventure, melodrama and drama. Made by Erman Film, it is in color and runs about 90 minutes. Hürrem Erman produced, Safa Önal and Orhan Aksoy wrote the script, and Gani Turanlı shot it. It reached cinemas in 1973.

The story turns on honor and vengeance. Zeynep (Hülya Şengül) kills herself after being seduced by Sarı Şehmus (İstemi Betil), the older brother of her friend, leaving a letter that tells her family everything. Her eldest brother Osman (Erol Taş) tries to take revenge on Şehmus but is killed by one of his men. Haydar (Cüneyt Arkın), the youngest brother, learns what happened on returning from his hometown and sets out to take revenge on those responsible for his siblings' deaths. Mümtaz Ener plays the family's uncle.

The cast also includes Fatma Belgen (Fatma), Ülkü Ülker (the singer Aynur), Turgut Savaş (the commissioner) and Kamran Usluer (Beşir). Abdurrahman Palay dubbed Cüneyt Arkın, Sadettin Erbil dubbed Erol Taş and Doğan Bavli dubbed İstemi Betil.

Through different eyes

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

A classic revenge setup: a sister's death, the eldest brother killed while trying to settle the score, then Cüneyt Arkın stepping in as Haydar. The motive is clear and the tension is there from the start. Watching Arkın face İstemi Betil's Sarı Şehmus is a treat. But melodrama is part of the genre mix too, and seventies tear-jerker conventions may drag the pace at times. If you like Arkın's revenge films, don't skip this one.

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

Alın Yazısı is one of those great tales of sorrow that Yeşilçam built on honour and vengeance. Seeing Cüneyt Arkın, Erol Taş and İstemi Betil in one film is an invitation in itself for anyone who misses the screen of those years. The script by Safa Önal and Orhan Aksoy tells of a family's successive ruin with the weight of fate. The voices Abdurrahman Palay gave Arkın and Sadettin Erbil gave Erol Taş also recall the dubbing craft of the period. That it adapts an Iranian film is an intriguing detail. Still, heavy subjects such as suicide and seduction may strike today's eyes as harsh.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Not really suitable for family viewing. A young girl is seduced and takes her own life, there are killings, and revenge runs from start to finish. Violence sits right at the heart of the story. I would not show it to young children. Grandparents who love Cüneyt Arkın films could watch it with their grown-up children, but it may be worth talking these subjects through afterwards.
