Stranger in the City (Şehirdeki Yabancı)

Stranger in the City is a 1962 Turkish drama film directed by Halit Refiğ from a story by Vedat Türkali. Regarded as an important representative of the social realism movement, it is considered the first Turkish film to deal with both workers' problems and the alienation of the intellectual. Refiğ, who had lived in Zonguldak between 1952 and 1953, returned there in 1962 to shoot the film; according to the credits, its background music was compiled from the works of Richard Wagner.

The film tells of Aydın, an engineer who returns to Zonguldak in the 1960s after studying in England, and his struggle for the rights of workers at a coal mine while growing alienated from and clashing with the townspeople. The cast includes Göksel Arsoy, Ali Şen and Erol Taş. It was screened at the 1963 Moscow Film Festival, where actress Nilüfer Aydan received an Honorary Diploma, and on 9 May 2008 it opened the 11th Flying Broom International Women's Film Festival.
