India Song

India Song is a 1975 French drama written and directed by Marguerite Duras, adapted from her 1973 stage play, itself inspired by her 1966 novel Le Vice-Consul, and part of her "Indian Cycle." Set in 1930s Calcutta during the monsoon, it follows Anne-Marie Stretter (Delphine Seyrig), the disillusioned wife of the French ambassador, whose boredom leads her into affairs while her husband quietly looks the other way. Although the story unfolds in India, it was shot mainly at the Château Rothschild in France. The film is known for its experimental form, in which voices and images are deliberately desynchronized and characters are never seen speaking their lines. It was France's submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 48th Academy Awards but received no nomination, and a companion piece, Her Venetian Name in Deserted Calcutta, followed in 1976.
