The Raindrop (Güle Güle)

Güle Güle (The Raindrop) is a 1999 Turkish comedy-drama directed by Zeki Ökten from a screenplay by Fatih Altınöz, marking the veteran director's return to cinema after many years. Released nationwide on 4 February 2000, the film follows five inseparable friends—four men and one woman named İsmet, Celal, Zarife, Şemsi and Galip—who have spent their lives together on the island of Bozcaada. Their carefully guarded bond is shaken when Galip learns he has cancer.

Galip has exchanged letters for thirty-five years with Rosa, a Cuban woman he met only once, and his friends resolve to raise the money needed to reunite him with her before he dies—a quest that eventually leads them to plan a bank robbery. Starring Metin Akpınar, Zeki Alasya, Yıldız Kenter, Eşref Kolçak and Haluk Bilginer, the film was notably the first project to reunite Alasya and Akpınar after thirteen years. Dedicated to the victims of the 1999 earthquakes, it won four awards at the 37th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, including Best Film.
