Yıldız Kenter — Biography

Born Ayşe Yıldız Kenter on 11 October 1928 in Istanbul's Üsküdar district, she graduated early from the Ankara State Conservatory and then spent eleven years with the Ankara State Theatre. A Rockefeller scholarship later took her to the United States, where she studied acting and teaching methods at the American Theatre Wing, the Neighborhood Playhouse and the Actors Studio.

Over a stage and screen career spanning more than four decades, she appeared in films including Ağaçlar Ayakta Ölür, Fatma Bacı, Vahşi Çiçek, Ablam, Hanım, Güle Güle, Büyük Adam Küçük Aşk, Sen Ne Dilersen and Beyaz Melek. She held the title of State Artist and served as a UNICEF Turkey Goodwill Ambassador. Together with her actor brother Müşfik Kenter and her husband, actor Şükran Güngör, she became one of the most enduring names in Turkish theatre.

Yıldız Kenter died in Istanbul on 17 November 2019. Her legacy lives on through a cultural center dedicated to her and her husband, as well as theatre stages that carry her name.
