Dialogue with the Carmelites

Dialogue with the Carmelites (Le Dialogue des carmélites) is a 1960 French-Italian historical drama co-directed by cinematographer Philippe Agostini and priest Raymond Léopold Bruckberger. It recounts the fate of the Martyrs of Compiègne, sixteen Carmelite nuns who, in 1794 during the closing phase of the Reign of Terror, were arrested after their convent was dissolved and sent to the guillotine in Paris for refusing to abandon their religious calling. The screenplay draws on Georges Bernanos's dialogues, themselves rooted in Gertrud von Le Fort's novella The Song at the Scaffold, which grew out of the memoir notes of a nun who survived the execution. As the sisters await trial and sentence, their fear, resolve and shared devotion come to the fore. The cast includes Jeanne Moreau, Alida Valli, Madeleine Renaud, Pascale Audret, Pierre Brasseur and Jean-Louis Barrault, alongside Georges Wilson and Pierre Bertin.
