The Mystery of Beyoğlu (Beyoğlu Esrarı) (translated)
A black-and-white Turkish adventure drama of 1966, Beyoğlu Esrarı ("The Mystery of Beyoğlu") was produced and directed by Türker İnanoğlu. Running 85 minutes, it is a nearly scene-for-scene Yeşilçam remake of Phil Karlson's 99 River Street (1953), shown in Turkey in 1955 as 99'uncu Sokak. The story is set on neon-lit İstiklal Avenue.
Our hero Osman, nicknamed Zımba, is an honest cab driver who works long hours in a 1955 Dodge to pay off instalments. He is devoted to Selma, a petrol station attendant who dreams of becoming an actress through an audition at the Yıldız Theatre. Jale, a striptease dancer and his regular passenger, is part of a jeweller robbery plan involving Rıfat. When the robbery ends in death, Rıfat looks for a way out, kills Jale and leaves her body on the back seat of Osman's taxi. With the police and the gang after him, Osman must clear his name and find the real culprit, helped by Selma and his fellow cabbies, led by Kadir Abi.
Öztürk Serengil plays Rıfat, İzzet Günay Osman, Selma Güneri Selma, Nubar Terziyan Kadir Abi and Mine Soley Jale, with Necdet Tosun also in the cast. Bülent Oran wrote the screenplay, Çetin Gürtop shot it, and Erler Film produced it.
