Beau Travail

Beau Travail is a 1999 French drama directed by Claire Denis, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jean-Pol Fargeau, loosely adapting Herman Melville's 1888 novella "Billy Budd" to a contemporary setting. With almost no dialogue, the film observes the daily routines of French Foreign Legion soldiers training in the desert of Djibouti, starring Denis Lavant, Michel Subor and Grégoire Colin.

The story is recounted by Galoup, a former officer who recalls from Marseille his admiration for his commander and the consuming jealousy he developed toward Sentain, a promising young recruit — an obsession that ultimately destroys them both. Produced by Pathé and Arte France Cinéma, the soundtrack draws partly on Benjamin Britten's 1951 opera based on the same novella. Premiering at the 1999 Venice Film Festival, the film earned wide acclaim and was voted the seventh greatest film of all time in Sight and Sound's 2022 critics' poll.
