The Intruder

The Intruder (original title L'Intrus) is a 2004 French drama directed by Claire Denis, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jean-Pol Fargeau. Inspired by a short text of the same name by philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, the film premiered in competition at the 61st Venice International Film Festival in September 2004 and opened in France in 2005.

The story follows Louis Trebor, a solitary man living with his dogs in a forest near the French-Swiss border. Suffering from a severe heart condition and in urgent need of a transplant, he abandons his home, his dogs and his estranged son to seek an illicit heart transplant abroad. His journey then takes him to Tahiti, where he once spent his youth, in search of another son he has never known, a quest that forces him to confront the shadows of his past.

Rejecting conventional storytelling in favour of a dreamlike, impressionistic flow between waking life and reverie, the film is regarded as one of Denis's most enigmatic works.
