The Cry of the Owl (Le Cri du hibou)

Le Cri du hibou (in English, The Cry of the Owl) is a psychological thriller that Claude Chabrol made in 1987 as a French-Italian co-production. It is based on Patricia Highsmith's 1962 novel of the same name, and Chabrol wrote the screenplay with Odile Barski. Filmed in French and running about 104 minutes, it is also described as a neo-noir drama. It was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 1987 and opened in France on 28 October 1987.

The story begins with Robert, an illustrator in the middle of a divorce, who secretly watches a young woman, Juliette, envying what looks to him like a happy life. When they meet, Juliette leaves her fiancé Patrick for Robert, and the situation quickly spirals into a chain of dramatic events. Christophe Malavoy plays Robert and Mathilda May plays Juliette, with Virginie Thévenet also among the leads. The supporting cast includes Jean-Pierre Kalfon, Albert Dray, Charles Millot, Dominique Zardi and Henri Attal.

Antonio Passalia is credited as producer and Matthieu Chabrol composed the music.
