The Cry of the Owl

Le Cri du hibou, released in English as The Cry of the Owl, a 1987 French-Italian psychological thriller directed by Claude Chabrol, is adapted from Patricia Highsmith's 1962 novel of the same name, with a screenplay by Chabrol and Odile Barski. Robert, an illustrator going through a divorce, secretly watches Juliette, a young woman whose seemingly contented life he envies. When the two finally meet and Juliette breaks off her engagement to Patrick to be with Robert, tensions rapidly mount and a chain of dramatic events unfolds. The cast is led by Christophe Malavoy, Mathilda May and Virginie Thévenet. The film was shown at the Toronto festival in September 1987 before opening in France that October.
