Nightingale of the East (Şark Bülbülü) (translated)

Şark Bülbülü is a 1979 Turkish comedy-drama film directed by Kartal Tibet from a screenplay by İhsan Yüce and Osman F. Seden. In his village, Şaban is engaged from the cradle to Hatice, but the local landowner Zülfo Ağa covets her and drives Şaban out of the village. To raise the substantial bride price demanded for Hatice, Şaban travels to Istanbul, where he takes on various jobs before his raw, soulful voice is discovered and he becomes a famous folk singer. Having made his fortune, he returns home as an ağa himself, marries Hatice and settles the score with those who wronged him. Kemal Sunal stars in the title role, with Ayşen Gruda and Ayşen Cansev in supporting parts. The film humorously portrays the era's familiar story of migration from village to big city.
