Offroad

Movie · 2012 · 15 people

Roughly “grab life by the horns” is the sense of the subtitle Pack das Leben bei den Hörnern of Offroad, a German comedy and road movie from 2012. Elmar Fischer directed it and wrote the script with Susanne Hertel. It came from Claussen+Wöbke+Putz Filmproduktion, run by Jakob Claussen and Uli Putz, and lasts about 98 minutes. Shooting took place in October and November 2010 in Berlin, Düsseldorf and Geilenkirchen.

Its heroine is Meike from Geilenkirchen, who buys a jeep at an auction and finds fifty kilograms of cocaine under its side panel. Learning around the same time that her fiancé is cheating on her, Meike resolves to sell the drugs and start over, without counting on the police or the real dealers. Nora Tschirner plays Meike, with Elyas M'Barek, Maximilian von Pufendorf, Leslie Malton and Nora Binder, as well as Dominic Raacke, Axel Milberg, Daniel Krauss, Bernd Stegemann, Constantin von Jascheroff and Heiko Pinkowski. Turkish actor Aykut Kayacık also appears.

Critics gave it mixed to negative notices, yet it did well in cinemas: about 421,000 viewers put it among the twenty most-watched German productions of 2012.

Through different eyes

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Offroad leans on a familiar set-up that mixes road movie and crime comedy: an ordinary woman, an unexpected cargo, the police and the real dealers on her trail. Elmar Fischer and Susanne Hertel's script chooses to turn that set-up into safe entertainment rather than squeeze surprises out of it. The gap between mixed-to-negative reviews and roughly 421,000 cinemagoers is exactly the result of that choice: a film that works commercially and has little ambition as cinema. At about 98 minutes it is the right length for a comedy like this. A pleasant time for fans of the genre's formulas, an ordinary effort for anyone after something new.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Think twice before putting it on with the family just because it's a comedy: the story is about fifty kilos of cocaine found in a jeep and a woman who decides to sell it. Drug dealing, a cheating fiancé and trouble with both police and dealers are not topics for young children. For adults and older teens it can be light fun. Anyone looking for a family comedy should pick another film.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The film tells, as comedy, the story of a woman from a small town like Geilenkirchen who decides to rebuild her life after her fiancé's betrayal. In that sense it leans on the figure of a heroine who chooses her own path, and it sets up an escape from the provinces. The presence of Turkish actor Aykut Kayacık in the cast is a small trace of the ties between German and Turkish cinema. But a comedy that hinges a fresh start on selling drugs makes light of that theme rather than deepening it; it is not the place to look for a social statement.
