Les Misérables

Les Misérables is a 1982 French drama directed by Robert Hossein, one of the many screen treatments of Victor Hugo's celebrated 1862 novel. Hossein co-wrote the screenplay with Alain Decaux, and the large ensemble is headed by Lino Ventura, Jean Carmet, Michel Bouquet and Roger Hanin. The production was entered into the 13th Moscow International Film Festival, where it was honoured with a Special Prize, while Carmet's performance earned him the César Award for Best Supporting Actor. Clocking in at around three and a half hours, the film also exists in a longer edition of roughly 210 minutes, split into four parts, which aired on French television on TF1 in May 1985. Reflecting its wide international circulation, the picture additionally reached Soviet cinemas in a version dubbed by the Lenfilm studio.
