Les Misérables

Les Misérables is a 1958 French-Italian-East German drama adapted from Victor Hugo's 1862 novel of the same name. Directed by Jean-Paul Le Chanois, who co-wrote the screenplay with Michel Audiard and René Barjavel, the film was released in two parts. Jean Gabin stars as the tormented former convict Jean Valjean, with Bernard Blier as his relentless pursuer, Inspector Javert.

Filming took place in 1957 at the Babelsberg studios in Potsdam and the Francœur studios in Paris, with early 19th-century Parisian streets reconstructed at the DEFA facilities. Released in France on 12 March 1958, the production drew more than 7.8 million viewers, becoming the year's most popular film there, and is often regarded as one of the most memorable screen versions of Hugo's novel.
