Deported

Deported is a 1950 American crime film noir directed by Robert Siodmak. The screenplay was written by Robert Buckner, who also served as producer; the 89-minute film was produced and distributed by Universal Pictures, with music composed by Walter Scharf. Staying close to the film noir tradition, its story is set in Italy.

At the center of the plot is a gangster deported from America and sent back to Italy, the country of his birth. He devises a scheme to smuggle his ill-gotten money into the country and, as part of the plan, grows close to a noble countess; yet as the relationship deepens, his calculations begin to clash with his feelings.

The lead roles are played by Märta Torén, Jeff Chandler, and Claude Dauphin, alongside a cast of mostly Italian and French actors including Marina Berti, Richard Rober, and Guido Celano. Much of the film was shot on location in Naples, Siena, and Tuscany; contemporary critics praised the Italian scenery while finding the screenplay overly talkative and unremarkable.
