Dear Caroline

Dear Caroline (original title Caroline chérie) is a 1968 historical drama directed by Denys de La Patellière and made as a co-production between France, Italy and West Germany. The screenplay, by Jacques Laurent, adapts the novel he had written under the pen name Cécil Saint-Laurent; the same book had already been filmed in 1951 by Richard Pottier with Martine Carol in the lead, so this version is a remake of that earlier picture. France Anglade plays Caroline, heading an international cast that also features Vittorio De Sica, Bernard Blier, Karin Dor, Charles Aznavour and Jean-Claude Brialy. Production took place at the Épinay Studios near Paris, shot in widescreen and Eastmancolor, with sets designed by art director Jean André and costumes created by Jacques Fonteray. The film had its world premiere in Italy on 18 January 1968, reached West German cinemas that March and subsequently opened elsewhere in Europe.
