Pierrot le Fou (Çılgın Pierrot)

Movie · 1965 · 5 people

Pierrot le Fou is a 1965 French-Italian film written and directed by Jean-Luc Godard. It was the director's tenth feature, loosely adapted from Lionel White's 1962 novel Obsession, and it stars Jean-Paul Belmondo alongside Anna Karina, who was married to Godard at the time.

Ferdinand, an unhappily married man suffocated by his bourgeois surroundings, reconnects with Marianne, a woman he knew years earlier. After a corpse turns up in her apartment, the pair flee Paris together, heading for the Mediterranean coast while gunmen linked to the Algerian conflict pursue Marianne. Along the way the lovers read poetry, sing, and commit crimes to get by, until betrayal sets the journey on course toward a tragic ending.

Cinematography was by Raoul Coutard and the score by Antoine Duhamel. The film premiered at the 1965 Venice Film Festival and is widely regarded as one of the defining works of the French New Wave.
