A Woman Is a Woman (Kadın Kadındır)

Written and directed by Jean-Luc Godard, the 1961 French-Italian romantic musical comedy Une femme est une femme (A Woman Is a Woman) was the filmmaker's first feature shot in color and in anamorphic widescreen, and it stands as one of the lighthearted landmarks of the French New Wave. Godard conceived it as a playful homage to the classic American musical comedy.

The story centers on Angela (Anna Karina), a striptease dancer in Paris who longs for nothing more than to have a baby. Her boyfriend Émile (Jean-Claude Brialy), with whom she lives, keeps putting off the idea. Worn down by her persistence, he jokingly suggests she spend a night with his best friend Alfred (Jean-Paul Belmondo). When Alfred then declares his love for Angela, the joke turns real, giving rise to misunderstandings, jealousy and quarrels within the triangle.

Michel Legrand composed the score, and Jeanne Moreau appears in a cameo. The film competed for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, where Anna Karina won the Best Actress award and Godard received a special Silver Bear.
