Silvana Mangano — Biography
Silvana Mangano was born on 21 April 1930 in Rome and died on 16 December 1989 in Madrid of lung cancer. Growing up poor during the war years, she trained as a dancer and took modeling jobs before a 1946 beauty-contest win opened the door to film work. As part of the generation shaped by Italian neorealism, she quickly rose to become one of the country's leading female stars and a widely recognized glamour icon of her era.
She built a long career working repeatedly with directors such as Pasolini, Visconti, Lattuada, and De Sica, earning three David di Donatello awards and two Nastro d'Argento wins for her performances. Late in life she still appeared on screen, taking supporting parts in David Lynch's Dune and Nikita Mikhalkov's Dark Eyes. She married the producer Dino De Laurentiis, and the couple had four children together, among them Veronica and Raffaella De Laurentiis.
