Weekend at Dunkirk

Weekend at Dunkirk (original title Week-end à Zuydcoote) is a 1964 French-Italian war drama directed by Henri Verneuil. It is adapted from Robert Merle's 1949 novel of the same name, which won the Prix Goncourt, and draws on real events from the early days of World War II.

The story follows French soldiers trapped on the beaches around Dunkirk in June 1940 as the German advance forces the Allied armies into retreat. While awaiting evacuation by sea, the men face bombardment, confusion and dwindling hope. Jean-Paul Belmondo stars, supported by Catherine Spaak, François Périer, Jean-Pierre Marielle and Georges Géret. The film portrays the ordeal of the stranded troops and the struggle to survive amid the chaos of defeat.
