Solino

Solino is a 2002 German-Italian drama directed by Fatih Akın from a screenplay by Ruth Toma, the first of his films he did not write himself. Spanning the years 1964 to 1984 in decade-long jumps, it follows the Amato family, who leave their home in Apulia in southern Italy and emigrate to Duisburg in Germany's Ruhr region, where they open the neighbourhood's first pizza parlour. Father Romano settles quickly into his new life as a restaurant owner, while mother Rosa never shakes her longing for her homeland. Their sons Gigi and Giancarlo relish the freedom of their new surroundings, but when both brothers fall in love with the same woman, their bond turns into bitter rivalry, and Gigi considers returning to Solino with his mother.
