Jean Marais stars in André Hunebelle's Le Miracle des loups (The Miracle of the Wolves), a 1961 French-Italian historical adventure of the swashbuckling kind. Its source is Henry Dupuy-Mazuel's 1924 novel, and it remakes the silent film of the same name by Raymond Bernard. It was shown in Germany as Im Zeichen der Lilie and in the United States as Blood on His Sword.

The action opens in June 1467, when Charles the Bold has just become Duke of Burgundy, and runs over the following months. Louis XI of France is in a cold war with his cousin the duke, and the duke's rages and the traitor Sénac threaten the peace. The king plans to settle matters by giving his goddaughter Jeanne de Beauvais in marriage to Charles, who desires her. But Jeanne loves Robert de Neuville, a knight in the king's service, and that love endangers the plan. The title refers to a key scene in which Jeanne is attacked by wolves. The feud between king and duke is historical; the romance is invented. The cast also includes Rosanna Schiaffino, Jean-Louis Barrault and Roger Hanin.

Many scenes were shot at the Cité de Carcassonne. The film opened in France on September 6, 1961 and in Germany on January 12, 1962. It runs about 126 minutes.
