Movie · 2017 · 15 people

The Turkish comedy Çalgı Çengi İkimiz (sometimes billed as Çalgı Çengi 2) opened on 6 January 2017 as the sequel to the 2010 film Çalgı Çengi. Selçuk Aydemir directed and wrote it; TR 40 33 produced it and Pinema distributed it. It sold roughly 2.8 million tickets and took over 32 million lira. It runs 116 minutes. Ahmet Kural, Murat Cemcir and Rasim Öztekin share the leads, with Ayhan Taş and Şinasi Yurtsever also in the cast.

The story picks up cousins Salih and Gürkan six years after the first film. Amateur musicians who stumbled into the mafia while chasing fame, they are forced to play and sing at the weddings of shady people. Salih wants out so he can marry the girl he loves, and the cousins are given one condition: kidnap the marriage officiant at a wedding. They accept, only to learn that the officiant is the man who once discovered Tarkan singing at a wedding, and he offers to make them stars. Odd turns follow.

Murat Cemcir has said the production spent close to 4 million dollars. Kural and Cemcir went on to appear together in the series İşler Güçler and Kardeş Payı after the first film's success.

Through different eyes

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

Wedding musicians are a world Turkish comedy has always loved; plenty of warm stories have grown out of dance tunes and dreams of fame. Çalgı Çengi İkimiz brings Salih and Gürkan's longing for stardom into that tradition. The rapport between Ahmet Kural and Murat Cemcir is a genuine pleasure, and having Rasim Öztekin in the cast is a bonus. Yet among the mobsters, the kidnapping plot and the shady weddings, the warmth of the old films slips into the background. It makes you laugh, but it is less generous about touching the heart.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

The setup has real movement: two cousins stuck with the mob have to kidnap a registrar at a wedding to get out. On paper, that is a tense crime comedy. But rather than turning the kidnapping into a line of suspense, the film lets it drift into odd side roads and jokes. At 116 minutes, it is a bit long for that pace. If you want laughs rather than thrills, this is the place.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

The much-loved duo of Ahmet Kural and Murat Cemcir are funny again, and teenagers will most likely enjoy this one. But the story involves the mob, weddings of shady people and a plan to kidnap someone. Even told as comedy, that is not a subject for young children. It works well with teens and grown-ups; for little ones, another film may be the better pick.
