A Bad Son

A Bad Son (Un mauvais fils, 1980) is a French drama directed by Claude Sautet, who co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Biasini and Jean-Paul Török. It follows a young man who returns to France after five years in an American prison for drug offenses and struggles to rebuild his life, reconnect with his widowed father and cope with falling in love with a former addict. Patrick Dewaere plays the lead, with Yves Robert as the father, Brigitte Fossey as his love interest and Jacques Dufilho as the bookseller who employs her.

Released in October 1980 amid a press boycott of Dewaere, the film was well received by critics and drew over a million admissions in France. It was nominated for six César awards, winning best supporting actor for Dufilho.
