Vincent, François, Paul and the Others

Vincent, François, Paul and the Others is a 1974 French-Italian drama directed by Claude Sautet, adapted by Sautet and Jean-Loup Dabadie from Claude Néron's novel La grande marrade. The film follows a close circle of middle-aged friends whose comfortable lives begin to unravel. Vincent, a small garage owner, faces mounting debts and a collapsing marriage, while François and Paul each wrestle with their own disappointments in love and work. As the friends gather, confide in one another and drift apart, the film offers a quiet, observant portrait of male friendship and midlife disillusionment. The ensemble is led by Yves Montand, Michel Piccoli and Serge Reggiani, with Gérard Depardieu in an early role. One of Sautet's characteristic studies of everyday lives, it premiered in France in the autumn of 1974.
