La Cité de l'indicible peur

La Cité de l'indicible peur is a 1964 French crime farce with touches of horror, directed by Jean-Pierre Mocky. It adapts the 1943 novel of the same name by Belgian writer Jean Ray, with Mocky relocating the original Scottish setting to a fictional town in France. Shot in black and white by cinematographer Eugen Schüfftan, the production was filmed in the small medieval town of Salers. The principal roles are played by Bourvil, Francis Blanche, Jean Poiret and Jean-Louis Barrault.

On its first release the distributor cut the film and retitled it La Grande Frousse; with roughly 680,000 admissions, its box-office success was modest. In 1972 Mocky reissued the work at its full length under the title he preferred, which matches that of the novel, La Cité de l'indicible peur.
