Taner Birsel — Biography
Taner Birsel was born in 1959 in the Akhisar district of Manisa. After studying journalism and public relations, he trained as an actor at Mimar Sinan University's State Conservatory Theatre Department between 1981 and 1985. A member of the Istanbul State Theatre ensemble since 1985, he has appeared on stage in nearly thirty productions, including classics such as King Lear, Hamlet and Cyrano de Bergerac.
He began his film career in 1990 with Osman Sınav's Yalancı Şafak and went on to work with directors ranging from Yeşim Ustaoğlu on Mud to Nuri Bilge Ceylan on Once Upon a Time in Anatolia. His role in The Confession helped the film reach the Un Certain Regard section of the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. Birsel is also known for Cars of the Revolution, The Butterfly's Dream, The Lamb and Ayla, and continued his screen career with the 2024 film Karanlık Gece.
