Nino Castelnuovo — Biography

Born Francesco Castelnuovo in Lecco on 28 October 1936, the Italian performer built a career spanning cinema, stage and television until his death in Rome on 6 September 2021. He became internationally recognizable as Guy Foucher, the young mechanic opposite Catherine Deneuve in Jacques Demy's musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964).

Castelnuovo entered Italian film in the late 1950s and drew wider notice for his part alongside Claudia Cardinale in Luchino Visconti's landmark Rocco and His Brothers (1960). He went on to appear across a wide range of genres, from the western Massacre Time (1966) to the war-adventure The Five Man Army (1969) and the comedy L'emmerdeur (1973). Later in his career he returned to the material that had defined him, appearing as himself in the 1995 documentary The World of Jacques Demy.
