Tough Enough (Knallhart)
Adapted from Gregor Tessnow's novel Knallhart, the title it also carried on release in Germany, Detlev Buck's social drama Tough Enough opened on 24 November 2006. It runs 99 minutes, in German. It follows one teenager through youth violence and the slide into crime in a poor Berlin district. Its subject is how dangerous a sudden fall from comfort into hardship can be for a young person who is already adrift. In France it was released as Les Enragés.
At its centre is fifteen-year-old Michael Polischka. When his mother Miriam splits from her very wealthy partner, the two leave their comfortable home in Zehlendorf for a poor, peripheral neighbourhood, Neukölln. Michael cannot build a healthy bond with his mother, and at school a gang of pupils leans on him. In trying to escape that pressure he ends up inside the neighbourhood's criminal world. David Kross plays Michael and Jenny Elvers plays Miriam. Oktay Özdemir portrays the gang leader Erol and Erhan Emre plays Hamal; the cast also includes Arnel Taci, Kai Müller and Georg Friedrich.
Tessnow wrote the screenplay together with Zoran Drvenkar. Claus Boje produced, and Bert Wrede composed the music. It was shot on 35 mm.
