Star Trek Beyond (Star Trek: Más allá)

Movie · 2016 · 15 people

Star Trek Beyond is a 2016 American science fiction action adventure and the thirteenth film to grow out of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek television series. It is the third chapter of the reboot that began in 2009. Justin Lin, best known for the Fast and Furious films, took over directing from J. J. Abrams, who stayed on as a producer. The release also opened the celebrations for the franchise's fiftieth anniversary.

The Enterprise and its crew meet a mysterious new enemy far out in uncharted space. Attacked and left stranded on an unknown planet, Captain Kirk must gather his scattered team and save the Yorktown base. Chris Pine plays Kirk and Zachary Quinto plays Spock, with Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldaña, John Cho and Anton Yelchin returning from the earlier films; Idris Elba, Sofia Boutella, Joe Taslim and Lydia Wilson join the cast. Pegg, who also plays Scotty, co-wrote the screenplay with Doug Jung.

Photography began in Vancouver on June 25, 2015. Paramount Pictures released the film in the US on July 22, 2016. It took about $343.5 million worldwide and was nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 89th Academy Awards. It is dedicated to Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin, both of whom died before its release.

Through different eyes

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

You can feel the hand of Justin Lin, known for the Fast and Furious films, right away; this one puts pace and big action set pieces first. The attack on the ship, a crew scattered across an unknown planet and the race to save Yorktown keep the tension alive. Even someone who has never seen the series can follow it easily. If you want philosophical science fiction, look elsewhere, but for a lively evening it hits the mark.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

The third film of the reboot shifts noticeably in tone as the director's chair passes from J. J. Abrams to Justin Lin. Lin is skilled at staging space and movement, but that choice pushes back the idea-driven, dialogue-heavy side of Star Trek's television roots. Simon Pegg and Doug Jung's script sets up a simple but functional structure that scatters the crew and brings it back together, and the scattering opens small but valuable spaces for a large cast. The real weakness is that the new enemy is underdeveloped: the threat is big, the motivation faint. The Oscar nomination for makeup acknowledges its craft; taken as a whole, though, it is solid and entertaining rather than a film that raises the series' bar.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Read as the film that opened the franchise's fiftieth-anniversary celebrations, Star Trek Beyond takes on extra meaning. Being the thirteenth film from a universe born of Gene Roddenberry's series shows how deep a loyalty spanning generations of viewers runs. Its dedication to Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin, both of whom died before its release, is a reminder that this shared world rests on bonds with real people. A story built on a crew scattered and reunited fits a series that puts solidarity forward. Still, rather than open that legacy up for discussion, the film settles for celebrating it inside an adventure frame.
