İdris Elba — Biography

Sir Idrissa Akuna Elba, widely known as Idris Elba, entered the world on 6 September 1972 in Hackney, London. A British artist of Sierra Leonean descent who also holds Sierra Leonean citizenship, he pursues acting, film production, directing, singing and DJing. Across his career he has won a Golden Globe and two Screen Actors Guild awards, and picked up three BAFTA and six Emmy nominations. Time placed him on its list of the hundred most influential people in 2016, and the global takings of his films have exceeded $9.8 billion, ranking him among the twenty highest-grossing actors.

Raised in east London, Elba attended Barking and Dagenham College and trained as a performer at the National Youth Music Theatre. As a young man he earned his living DJing in bars and clubs. In his early twenties he began collecting minor roles on British television, first attracting notice as Tim in Family Affairs.

His major breakthrough arrived in America with the HBO series The Wire (2002-2004), in which he played Russell "Stringer" Bell, a drug lord dreaming of legitimate business. He appeared as Charles Miner in the NBC sitcom The Office (2009), and his guest appearance in The Big C (2011) brought an Emmy nomination. As DCI John Luther in the BBC One crime series Luther (2010-2019) he earned a Golden Globe plus four Emmy nominations, and the Apple TV+ thriller Hijack (2023) earned him another.

In cinema he reached wide audiences through American Gangster (2007) and Ridley Scott's Prometheus (2012), before taking the lead in Pacific Rim (2013). His portrayal of Nelson Mandela in the biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013) was rewarded with a Golden Globe nomination. His turn as a ruthless yet charismatic warlord in Beasts of No Nation (2015) won him the Screen Actors Guild award alongside BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations, while his exclusion from the Oscar shortlist that year fuelled a fierce debate over diversity in the awards system. Other prominent credits include Star Trek Beyond (2016), Hobbs & Shaw (2019), The Harder They Fall (2021), Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022) and A House of Dynamite (2025).

Franchise productions have also relied on him heavily: he embodied Heimdall in six Marvel Cinematic Universe films beginning with Thor (2011), and played the mercenary Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad (2021). In voice acting he has been heard as Chief Bogo in Zootopia (2016) and its 2025 sequel, as the tiger Shere Khan in The Jungle Book (2016), as Fluke in Finding Dory (2016) and as Knuckles in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series. His first outing as a director was Yardie (2018), adapted from Victor Headley's novel, and he also took the role of Man-At-Arms in Masters of the Universe (2026).

Music runs alongside his screen work: performing under the names DJ Big Driis or Big Driis the Londoner, he focuses chiefly on hip hop and soul while also producing house and tech house, and he owns his own label, 7WALLACE. His albums include Idris Elba Presents mi Mandela (2014) and Murdah Loves John (2015). Already an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), he was knighted by King Charles in 2025. Long linked in the press with the role of James Bond, Elba has dismissed the speculation as unrealistic. In 2025 he was also named the UK's ninth-most influential Black person on the Powerlist. He is married to Sabrina Dhowre.
