On Guard

On Guard (original title Le Bossu) is a 1997 French-Italian-German swashbuckler film directed by Philippe de Broca. Adapted from Paul Féval's 1857 historical novel of the same name, it was scripted by de Broca together with Jean Cosmos and Jérôme Tonnerre, and stars Daniel Auteuil, Fabrice Luchini, Vincent Perez and Marie Gillain.

The story follows Lagardère, a skilled swordsman befriended by the Duke of Nevers. When the duke is treacherously murdered by his cousin Gonzague, the dying duke asks Lagardère to avenge him and protect his infant daughter. Released in France on 3 December 1997, the film was a commercial success, earning eight César Award nominations in 1998 and winning Best Costume Design, as well as a BAFTA nomination in 1999.
