Manon 70

Directed by Jean Aurel, Manon 70 is a 1968 drama produced jointly by France, Italy and West Germany. As its title suggests, the film offers a loose reworking of Antoine François Prévost's celebrated 1731 novel Manon Lescaut, shifting the classic story from its original period into the modern world of the late 1960s. Catherine Deneuve leads an ensemble that also features Jean-Claude Brialy, Sami Frey, Elsa Martinelli, Robert Webber and Paul Hubschmid. Aurel co-wrote the screenplay with Cécil Saint-Laurent, and the original score was composed by Serge Gainsbourg. Running roughly 101 minutes, the picture premiered in French cinemas in February 1968 before opening in West Germany in May that same year.
