Those Who Awaken in the Dark (Karanlıkta Uyananlar) (translated)

Karanlıkta Uyananlar (Those Who Awaken in the Dark) is a 1964 Turkish black-and-white political drama directed by Ertem Göreç from a screenplay by Vedat Türkali, produced by Lütfi Ömer Akad and Beklan Algan. Running about 114 minutes, it reached audiences in 1965 and stands among Göreç's early works.

The story follows the struggle between the workers of a paint factory and a young employer who takes over the business after his father's death and sides with the laborers. Dealing directly with unionization, workers' rights and strikes, it was one of the few Turkish films of its era to tackle such issues head-on. Fikret Hakan leads the cast alongside Beklan Algan, Ayla Algan, Tülin Elgin and Kenan Pars. At the 2nd Antalya Film Festival it won Best Screenplay, Best Original Music and Third Best Film, but protests by a group led the Ministry of Interior to have it removed from screening.
