The Big Blue (Derinlik Sarhoiluğu)

Le Grand Bleu (released in some countries as The Big Blue) is a 1988 Franco-Italian-American drama film co-written and directed by Luc Besson. Produced by Gaumont and shown at the opening of the 1988 Cannes Film Festival, it is a heavily fictionalized story inspired by the lives of champion free divers Jacques Mayol and Enzo Maiorca, as well as Besson's own childhood; the real Mayol himself took part as a screenwriter.

The plot follows two divers who spent their childhood on the Greek island of Amorgos in the 1960s: Jacques Mayol (Jean-Marc Barr) and Enzo Molinari (Jean Reno), who reunite years later as rivals at a no-limits diving championship in Taormina, Sicily. Mayol's fictional romance with New Yorker Johana Baker (Rosanna Arquette) heightens the tension between his longing for the deep and his ties to life on land. Awarded the César for Éric Serra's music, the film drew over nine million viewers in France, becoming one of the decade's biggest French box-office successes and a generational touchstone.
