Coriolanus

Coriolanus is a 2011 drama and war film adapted from William Shakespeare's tragedy of the same name, marking Ralph Fiennes's directorial debut. Written by John Logan, the UK-US co-production was made by Icon Productions and BBC Film. Shakespeare's original language is preserved while the story is transplanted to a contemporary, pseudo-Balkan setting evoking the Yugoslav Wars, with filming beginning in March 2010 in Serbia and Montenegro.

The film follows Roman general Caius Martius, a brilliant military leader who saves his people yet openly despises them. Despite winning the senate's backing, he dismisses the populace's demands, and when rejected at the ballot his fury leads to banishment; in revenge he allies with his longtime enemy Tullus Aufidius against Rome. Fiennes also takes the title role, joined by Gerard Butler, Vanessa Redgrave, Brian Cox and Jessica Chastain. The film had its world premiere in the main competition of the 61st Berlin International Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Golden Bear.
