Circle of Love

Circle of Love (original title La Ronde) is a 1964 French-Italian film directed by Roger Vadim, adapted from Arthur Schnitzler's 1897 play Reigen. In Jean Anouilh's screenplay, the setting is shifted from Vienna to Paris during the Belle Époque. The story is built as a chain of romantic encounters: one partner from each couple moves on to a new lover, so the circle of desire passes through every level of society before finally returning to the character who opened it, now paired with someone else. The ensemble cast includes Jean-Claude Brialy, Jane Fonda, Anna Karina, Maurice Ronet and Catherine Spaak. On its release the film attracted minor controversy because it featured Jane Fonda in a nude scene, reportedly the first by a major American actress in a foreign production.
