Chrysalis (Camdaki Kız)

TV Series · 2021–2023 · 3 people

Kanal D aired the first episode of the Turkish drama series Camdaki Kız on 8 April 2021. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Gülseren Budayıcıoğlu, it is an OGM Pictures production directed by Nadim Güç and written by Seda Altaylı Turgutlu and Yeşim Aslan. It ran for three seasons and ended with its 82nd episode on 15 June 2023. The winner of the Golden Butterfly for Best Series, it is known in English as Chrysalis and was also shown in Serbia on Pink from 12 June 2023.

At its centre is young Nalan, who wins everyone's affection at first sight with her warmth. Nalan believes the couple who raised her are her parents, but they are in fact her grandparents, and that hidden truth forms the emotional axis of the story. Graduating with honours, she starts work as an architect at the Koroğlu company, which runs Turkey's largest hotel chain, and moves toward marriage with the family's youngest son, Sedat Koroğlu. The two set off hopefully, thinking they are leaving the dark secrets of their pasts behind, but before long their lives sink into real darkness.

Burcu Biricik stars as Nalan, with Feyyaz Şerifoğlu as Sedat and Selma Ergeç as Selen. The cast also includes Nur Sürer and Cihangir Ceyhan as Hayri. The series was shot in Istanbul.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Camdaki Kız is a highly emotional drama that keeps its audience hooked across three seasons and 82 episodes. Nalan believing the grandparents who raised her are her parents forms the emotional backbone of the show, and Burcu Biricik gives a performance that can carry that weight. Her chemistry with Feyyaz Şerifoğlu makes the step into the Koroğlu family's world believable. Its Golden Butterfly for Best Series comes as no surprise. But honestly, over such a long run the story keeps circling back to the same pain, the darkness never really lifts, and some episodes feel far too heavy.

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

Adapted from Gülseren Budayıcıoğlu's novel, Camdaki Kız carries the familiar vein of our old family melodramas into today's television: a hidden truth, a warm-hearted young woman and a wealthy family that puts her to the test. Nalan's kindness, which wins everyone over at first sight, recalls the pure-hearted heroes of Yeşilçam. Seeing a seasoned actress like Nur Sürer on screen is a joy in itself. But the way the story sinks so deeply into darkness may weigh on an eye raised on older tales where hope had more room.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Camdaki Kız brings a young architect's path across that of the Koroğlu family, who run Turkey's largest hotel chain, putting class difference and family secrets at its centre. The theme of a child raised by grandparents as their own evokes a familiar cultural pattern of truths kept hidden for generations so that they stay within the family. Weaving questions of identity and belonging around that secret, the series manages to reach a wide audience. Over its long run, though, social observation sometimes gives way to melodramatic excess, and the characters can turn into figures dragged from one conflict to the next.
