Bodrum Judge (Bodrum Hakimi) (translated)

Bodrum Hakimi is a 1976 Turkish romantic drama directed by Türkan Şoray, who also stars in the lead role. It is one of only four films she ever directed. The screenplay was written by Safa Önal, the score composed by Cahit Berkay, and the cast includes Kadir İnanır opposite Şoray, along with Yıldırım Gencer. The picture enjoyed considerable popularity when it was released.

Nevin, a young and beautiful judge, is assigned to a coastal town. When she interferes in the affairs of Ömer Bey, the town's beloved and respected figure, she quickly draws everyone's attention. Ömer falls in love with the young woman and cannot bring himself to object to her actions, and in time the judge falls for him as well, yet a great obstacle stands in the way of their union. The story draws on a local folk song rooted in real events: Mefaret Tüzün, one of the first female judges of the Turkish Republic, ended her own life in 1954 in Bodrum, where she had been appointed in 1951, under circumstances that remain unclear to this day. One account holds that she took her life after sentencing to death the prisoner she loved.
