Honey (Bal)

Movie · 2010 · 2 people

Honey (Turkish: Bal) is a 2010 drama film directed by Semih Kaplanoğlu, who co-wrote the screenplay with Orçun Köksal. A co-production between Turkey, Germany, and France, it is the third and final part of Kaplanoğlu's "Yusuf Trilogy", preceded by Egg and Milk, and travels furthest back in the trilogy's chronology to the poet Yusuf's childhood. Filming took place in the Çamlıhemşin district of Rize, at the foot of the Kaçkar Mountains.

The film portrays six-year-old Yusuf, who has just started school, and his close bond with his father, a beekeeper working deep in the forest. One night Yusuf whispers a dream to his father, keeping its content a secret; when his father ventures into the forest depths and never returns, the boy grows increasingly withdrawn and eventually sets out into the woods to find him. The 104-minute film stars Erdal Beşikçioğlu, Tülin Özen, and Bora Altaş. Premiering on 16 February 2010 in competition at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival, it became the third Turkish film to win the Golden Bear and was selected as Turkey's candidate for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar at the 83rd Academy Awards, though it did not reach the final shortlist.
