Aysel, the Girl from the Swampy Roof (Aysel Bataklı Damın Kızı) (translated)

Movie · 1934 · 0 people

This 1934 black-and-white production is regarded as the first film shot in Turkey to center on village life. Nâzım Hikmet Ran wrote the screenplay, adapted from a story by Selma Lagerlöf, and Cemal Reşit Rey composed the original music. Muhsin Ertuğrul directed the İpek Film production, also serving as art director and appearing in a minor role, while Cezmi Ar and Remzi Ar handled cinematography.

The story follows Aysel, who becomes pregnant by her employer Satılmışzade while working in his household and goes to court for child support, only for him to deny paternity. Ali, from the village of Çamlıbel, is impressed by her conduct at the trial and offers her work caring for his bedridden mother. Ali's fiancée Gülsüm objects and Aysel is sent away; when Satılmışzade is later found murdered after a tavern brawl, suspicion falls on Ali, though the real killer is eventually discovered and Ali is reunited with Aysel. The film was remade in 1969 by director Zafer Davutoğlu.
