Augustine

Augustine is a 2012 French historical drama film written and directed by Alice Winocour in her feature directorial debut. Set in 19th-century France, it portrays the relationship between neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot and Louise Augustine Gleizes, a young kitchen maid diagnosed with hysteria who suffers partial paralysis on the left side of her body after a violent seizure. Although inspired by real historical figures, the film depicts a fictional love affair between the two; in reality, no such relationship existed.

The film had its world premiere in the Special Screenings section of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and was later shown in the Discovery section of the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. It opened theatrically in France in November 2012 and received a limited United States release in May 2013 through Music Box Films. Vincent Lindon and Grégoire Colin star, alongside Soko and Chiara Mastroianni.
