Mohammad-Ali Fardin — Biography
Mohammad-Ali Fardin (Persian: محمدعلی فردین; 7 April 1930, Tehran – 6 April 2000, Tehran) was an Iranian actor, film director, screenwriter and freestyle wrestler. As a wrestler he took a silver medal at the 1954 World Championship, and he entered cinema in the late 1950s when producer Ismail Kushan invited him to appear in Cheshme Ab Hayat (1959).
Through the 1960s and 1970s Fardin was the biggest box-office draw in Iranian cinema, typically cast as the poor but golden-hearted young man or as a hero embodying courage and chivalry. His role in Soltane Ghalbha (King of Hearts) earned him that nickname among the public. Notable titles from his long career include Ganj-e Qarun, Baba Shamal, Ayyoob, Hell + Me and Jabbar, Runaway Sergeant; he also worked behind the camera as a director, writer and producer. After the 1979 revolution he appeared in only one more film, and with most of his earlier pictures banned he opened a bakery in Tehran. More than twenty thousand people attended his funeral in 2000.
