Tunç Başaran — Biography
Tunç Başaran (1 October 1938, Istanbul – 18 December 2019, Istanbul) was a Turkish film director and screenwriter. The son of novelist Pakize Başaran and elder brother of stage actress Meriç Başaran, he studied at the Faculty of Letters of Istanbul University, where his interest in cinema led him to work as an assistant to director Memduh Ün.
He made his directing debut in 1964 with Hayat Kavgası and went on to direct more than fifty films. Among his best-known works are Uçurtmayı Vurmasınlar (Don't Let Them Shoot the Kite, 1989), Piano Piano Bacaksız (Piano Piano Kid, 1991), Uzun İnce Bir Yol (1991), Sen de Gitme (1995), Kaçıklık Diploması (1998), Abuzer Kadayıf (2000), Sinema Bir Mucizedir (2005) and Vesaire Vesaire (2008).
His honours include the Golden Orange Best Director Award, the International Adana Film Festival Best Director Award and the Golden Orange Life Achievement Award. His 1989 film Uçurtmayı Vurmasınlar was restored and re-released in 2024. Başaran died in Istanbul on 18 December 2019.
