Tristana

Tristana is a 1970 drama directed by Luis Buñuel, adapted from Benito Pérez Galdós's 1892 novel of the same name with a screenplay by Buñuel and Julio Alejandro. A Spanish-French-Italian co-production filmed in Toledo, it stars Catherine Deneuve, Fernando Rey and Franco Nero; Deneuve and Nero, who did not speak Spanish, were dubbed into the film's Spanish dialogue.

The story centers on Don Lope, an aging man who raises the orphaned Tristana from childhood. As she grows into a young woman, his guardianship curdles into possessive desire. Drawn to art and freedom, Tristana eventually leaves his household after meeting a young painter. The film marked Buñuel's return to his native Spain after years of working abroad, and it was received warmly by critics. It screened out of competition at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Foreign-Language Film at the 43rd Academy Awards.
