To Die of Love

Movie · 1971–1972 · 2 people

To Die of Love (original title: Mourir d'aimer) is a 1971 Franco-Italian drama directed by André Cayatte. The film draws on a real case that shook France, the Gabrielle Russier affair, in which a teacher's forbidden relationship with one of her students brings her into conflict with the law and public opinion, and drives the story toward tragedy.

Written by Cayatte together with Pierre Dumayet, the screenplay also examines the media frenzy and judicial machinery surrounding the scandal, questioning the moral climate of the period. Starring Annie Girardot in the lead, it became the third most popular film in France in 1971. The supporting cast includes Bruno Pradal, Charles Millot, Claude Cerval, Jean Bouise and François Simon.
