The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden is a 1993 American-British fantasy drama directed by Agnieszka Holland, with a screenplay by Caroline Thompson adapted from Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1911 novel of the same name. Produced by American Zoetrope, executive-produced by Francis Ford Coppola and distributed by Warner Bros., it was the third screen adaptation of the novel, following versions in 1919 and 1949.

After losing her parents in India, young Mary Lennox is sent to live with her uncle, Lord Archibald Craven, at his Yorkshire estate, where she discovers a long-locked secret garden and builds a new world of her own as she brings it back to life. Most of the filming took place at Allerton Castle in Yorkshire. The film earned around $40 million worldwide and was both a critical and commercial success; Maggie Smith received a BAFTA nomination, Zbigniew Preisner's score won recognition from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and in 2005 the British Film Institute included it among the 50 films one should see by the age of 14.
