The Black Monocle

The Black Monocle (original title: Le Monocle noir) is a 1961 French comedy crime film directed by Georges Lautner. The picture stars Paul Meurisse, Elga Andersen and Bernard Blier, with a screenplay by Pierre Laroche and Jacques Robert drawn from the novels featuring Colonel Rémy. Running about 88 minutes, it belongs to the French tradition of blending detective intrigue with humor.

The film launched a small series: Lautner returned to direct two sequels, The Eye of the Monocle (L'Œil du Monocle) in 1962 and The Monocle Laughs (Le Monocle rit jaune) in 1964, continuing the adventures of its gentlemanly monocled hero.
