Stranger in the House

Stranger in the House (French: L'Inconnu dans la maison) is a 1992 French crime drama directed by Georges Lautner, with Jean-Paul Belmondo in the leading role. It is a loose adaptation of Georges Simenon's 1940 novel Les Inconnus dans la maison, which had already been brought to the screen by Henri Decoin in 1942. Structured as a courtroom film, it draws on the judicial atmosphere of Simenon's story.

The picture marked Belmondo's return to cinema after four years devoted exclusively to the stage. It was also the fifth and final collaboration between Lautner and Belmondo, following films such as Flic ou Voyou (1979), Le Professionnel (1981) and Joyeuses Pâques (1984). Released to little enthusiasm, it proved a commercial failure, drawing only 413,794 admissions in France. Sandrine Kiberlain also appears in the cast.
