Loose Cannons (Mine vaganti)
Ferzan Özpetek directed Loose Cannons (Italian: Mine vaganti), a 2010 Italian comedy-drama. It centres on a well-off southern Italian family that runs a pasta factory, and on the secret both of its sons are hiding. The 110-minute film had its first showing on 13 February 2010 at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival and reached cinemas in Italy, Switzerland and Turkey the following month.
The story follows the traditional Cantone family. Tommaso comes home after finishing his studies in Rome, planning to bring everyone together, tell them he is gay and leave the family business to become a writer. At the family gathering, however, his brother Antonio announces the very same truth first. The cast is led by Riccardo Scamarcio, Nicole Grimaudo, Alessandro Preziosi, Lunetta Savino, Ennio Fantastichini and Ilaria Occhini.
Özpetek wrote the screenplay with Ivan Cotroneo, and Domenico Procacci produced under the Fandango banner. In the United States the film won the Special Jury Prize at the Tribeca Film Festival on 28 April 2010, and it later played in Seattle, Provincetown, Palm Springs and London. Reviews were generally positive; the film was nominated for thirteen David di Donatello Awards, including Best Film, and took the supporting actor and supporting actress prizes for Ennio Fantastichini and Ilaria Occhini.
